When shopping for a computer, have a clear idea of what you want to do with the computer.  It is not so important to have specifications predefined.  The hardware available in computers is constantly changing.  If you can communicate to a sales rep your needs (i.e. gaming, web browsing, digital photography, video editing....) they can tell you what mix of features is important.  Generally speaking, it never hurts to buy a little more than you think you need, that will help your computer survive longer.

Overtime, it can seem like a computer is even slower than it originally was.  In many cases this is true.  A good tune-up can revive a computer that is just crawling along.   A tune-up can mean an optimization of the machine and a thorough cleaning.  Or it can be physical upgrades.  Adding RAM to a computer is the single most effective upgrade to a computer.  Other upgrades, like a CD recorder or a larger hard drive, have benefits, but do not usually impact the speed of a computer.  Replacing the processor and motherboard is rarely worth the expense.  Buying a new machine is usually more cost efficient.  Check the prices above.  The Basic computer is usually better and faster than your average 1.5+ year old computer.

There are a few general rules to follow to keep your computer running well.  Anti-virus software is a must.  Norton and Mcafee both make good products, and there are a few decent free anti-virus programs available.  Never open attachments that you were not expecting.  If something looks suspicious, do not open or install it.  Beware of file/music sharing programs.  Programs like Kazaa and Imesh are loaded with spyware.  Spyware is the primary culprit in pop-up problems.  These programs record your internet activity and target advertisements towards you based on usage.

Back up, back up, back up.  You never now when your computer maybe crippled by a failure.  A backup of your files and settings is priceless in a case like that.  CD and DVD recorders are the best backup solution for most people.  Uninstall and remove old programs.  Between these tips and a professional tune-up, you can keep your computer at its optimal performance and extend its useful life.

Usage of wireless networks has exploded in recent years.  Prices for equipment have dropped and broadband usage has increased.  Wireless networks are great for sharing a broadband connection among multiple computers and for file and printer sharing.  Unfortunately, they can be tricky to be setup and maintain.  Most customers that setup their own networks neglect security concerns.  Whether you set up a wireless network yourself or have a professional do it, make sure you consider the various levels of security and encryption available.  An improperly setup network will leave your computers WIDE open to intruders.  Search for  "wardriving" in google and you will get an idea of what people do just for fun.  Most of the "setup wizards" that come with equipment can successfully connect you to the internet, but almost all of them completely skip over security and leave all features turned off by default.
